Leatherhead match report
Fetcham Grove was rarely a happy hunting ground for Kingstonian last season with Leatherhead winning all three encounters and despite The Tanners now finding themselves at the wrong end of the table, the outcome was no different this time around.
The 2-1 defeat stalled Ks’ recent progress up the league and was a reminder that although form at King George’s Field is good, finding the right formula away from home remains a challenge.
Nonetheless Ks got off to a perfect start, Elliott Buchanan threading the ball behind the defence in just the second minute for Alfie Doughty, who beat goalkeeper Zaki Oualah with a wonderful chip.
But Ks’ bad recent habit of conceding goals shortly after scoring them reared its head again, Travis Gregory played in behind the defence and firing across Rob Tolfrey to level the scores on just six minutes.
David Fitzpatrick was missing for Ks which robbed them of the ability, so crucial of late, to play fast, skilful wingers on either side of the pitch. Leigh Dynan instead went with a wing-back formation but Ks struggled to create the same volume of chances that they have in recent weeks.
The rest of the half did not live up the promise of the first few minutes, with sparse levels of action. D’Sean Theobolds came closest for Leatherhead with Manolis Gagonas firing wide for Ks as the half drew to a close.
Theobolds found the target shortly after half-time though with a powerful finish from the edge of the box after twisting and turning his way past a pair of Ks defenders.
Ks looked to strike back quickly but Oualah made a wonderful save to keep the home side in the lead, tipping a fierce Buchanan shot onto the crossbar after good work from Aaron Lamont.
It was one of the best saves that will be made against Ks all season, so in that sense they were a bit unlucky. But the chance was not followed up by the sort of pressure you might expect against a team in the relegation zone.
Doughty had an effort comfortably saved, Lamont fired over and Louie Theophanous was denied a good chance by the linesman’s flag. But Leatherhead also had their chances, with Shaun Okojie coming close and Tolfrey saving from Robert Cullen late on.
As a frustrating night drew to a close, Ks fans were left to lament the side’s lack of consistency with a chance to move into a playoff position wasted.
