Margate 1-1 Kingstonian
A late penalty denies Kingstonian an opening day win.
A 90th minute penalty from Ben Greenhalgh gave Margate a draw in an exciting opening day contest at a blazingly hot Hartsdown Park.
Kingstonian opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half when Tyrese Owen, one of nine Kingstonian debutants on the day, powered home a header past the fine Margate goalkeeper Amadou Tangara.
K's did hit the post early in the second half when Thomas Gogo's shot after a defensive error gave him a chance for a snapshot, but for the most part of the second half it did seem that the visitors would be able to hang on. Sadly for the K's, though, the referee awarded Margate a penalty when Thomas Gogo was adjudged to have fouled James Bessey-Saldanha on the edge of the penalty area, which was enough for the 'Gate to claim their point.
Kingstonian will be disappointed not to have hung on to win, but overall the game was a highly positive start to life with Lee O'Leary as K's manager.
