K's Academy beat the 'Leafe
A late winner from Keshone Beech-Williams brought an end to the K’s Academy’s run of losing results.
The opening twenty minutes saw little in the way of good chances for either side, although the K’s had settled nicely and were playing some good possession football. It was then somewhat disappointing to see Whyteleafe take the lead with their first effort on target in the 22nd minute. Liam Francis got in behind the K’s defence before squaring the ball to Kelvin Eduardo who shot home past Ronaldo Cardoso.
The K’s drew level in the 32nd minute. Rmarni Blankson slipped a pass to Taylor Green who accelerated along the right flank before crossing to the awaiting Josh Johnson who swept the ball home.
Johnson almost added another four minutes before half time, but he was unable to find sufficient power in his shot to trouble Karl Woolhouse in the Whyteleafe goal.
On the stroke of half time the K’s fashioned a good move along the right flank which saw them take the lead. Glodi Kayindo and Jeffrey Minter created an opening which saw the latter deliver a decent cross into the Whyteleafe penalty area. This cross was touched on by Josh Johnson into the path of Nash Doukoure, who struck the ball home from close range.
Half time: 2-1
The second half started well for Whyteleafe as Liam Francis pounced on a defensive mistake to equalise for his side in the 49th minute.
The K’s went close to restoring their lead in the 50th minute when Doukoure’s cross was met by a goal bound header from Taylor Green, but Woolhouse was just able to claw the ball away at the expense of a corner.
In a tense second half, both sides went close to taking the lead. Liam Francis went closest for Whyteleafe when his 72nd minute shot went narrowly wide. Then in the 83rd minute, Josh Johnson had a good chance for the K’s, when he ran through on goal in a one on one situation but was denied by Woolhouse, who deflected his shot around the post for a corner.
However, there was to be one further significant chance in the match and it fell to the K’s in the 88th minute. Rmarni Blankson showed good determination and strength to win the ball close to the touchline. Having shrugged off his marker, he then delivered a fine cross which was met by Keshone Beech-Williams, who headed the ball over Woolhouse to give his side the lead.
The K’s nervously survived five minutes of stoppage time to secure their first victory of 2017.
