K's Heartbroken at the End
K's suffer the agony of conceding a 90th minute equaliser which means probable relegation.
report by K's manager Mark Robson
At the end of a long hard season for the ladies in a much tougher Division 1 than the one we had experienced last season, we knew that only a victory today in our final league game versus Luton Town Development would leave us with a chance of avoiding the drop into Division 2 South.
Despite injuries and other absences, we were still able to field a squad of 14 players today. The game started off with Luton pushing into our half, but rarely threatening our goal. On the contrary, we were looking lively on the break and, after 11 minutes Olivia Watson put Sophia Demetriou through on goal and Sophia slotted the ball home to give us the lead. 1-0. Only 4 minutes later Sophia surged down the right wing and slung in a cross that the Luton defence couldn’t deal with and the ball dropped to Shula Norman who rammed the ball home to make it 2-0.
Back came Luton however, and with 20 minutes on the clock a cross was spilled and unluckily an attempted clearance rebounded back off one of our own players into the path of a Luton striker who tucked the ball in to make it 2-1.
There was drama on 40 minutes when a Luton striker was adjudged to have been fouled inside the penalty area by our goalkeeper Ellie Lourdes; however, Ellie made amends by tipping a powerfully taken penalty over the bar to preserve our lead. What a great save! HT 2-1.
The second half ebbed and flowed with our ladies enjoying a bit more possession than in the first half, but we were unable to convert several decent chances that fell our way. With legs tiring and the clock ticking towards the final whistle, Luton forced one final corner. The ball was parried away, but our defence failed to clear their lines and the ball was fired back into the six yard box from where a Luton player managed to divert it into the far corner of our goal. We barely had time to kick off again before the referee blew for full time and the realisation that we had failed by no more than 30 seconds to hold on to our Division 1 lifeline. FT 2-2.
Relegation doesn’t come about as a result of just one game, and, over the course of the season our very young ladies team just didn’t have quite the experience to pick up enough points against some talented, more experienced teams. What makes relegation a bit harder to stomach is that today’s opponents Luton Town Development have only amassed the points needed for survival by fielding their FA Women’s Premier League 1st team players in the Development team when their first team haven’t had a game. Technically not an offence, but morally....
Thanks for reading this season and enjoy the break!
