K's Gain a Vital Three Points

K's moved out of the relegation zone with a morale boosting 3-1 win over Bromley.

With us sitting second bottom and today’s opponents, Bromley, just one place and one point above us it was an archetypal six pointer today.

We were without Sophia Demetriou, Charlotte Willis-Sloanes and Georgina Wickham today, but we welcomed back goalkeeper Nadine Elish after a three match absence and Hanna Robson who was home from university for the weekend.

In alternating sun and hail, and battling against a strong wind, we started brightly and with 18 minutes on the clock a great through ball from Olivia Watson saw Eve McBrinn burst through behind the Bromley left back, and in a one on one race with the Bromley keeper. Eve won that race and slotted the ball into the empty net. 1-0.

We were exerting most of the pressure in this half, and created most of the chances. However five minutes before the break we were hit by a sucker punch. A break down the Bromley left saw a cross slung in, which Nadine in goal couldn’t quite gather and a Bromley striker had the simple job of bundling the loose ball over the goal-line. HT 1-1

The second half continued in a similar vein to the first, with us exerting most of the pressure. Bromley continued to be dangerous on the break however and nearly took the lead when a high lofted shot landed on the top of our crossbar.

On 70 minutes however the lively Shula Norman gathered the ball on the right and drove past a defender and as she approached the penalty area she unleashed a right-footed rocket which gave the Bromley goalie no chance. 2-1.

Bromley worked hard to get back in to the game after that, and we had a few nerve-racking moments. But, with 85 minutes on the clock, Eve McBrinn burst into the Bromley penalty area and was scythed down. The referee didn’t hesitate in pointing to the penalty spot. After waiting for what seemed like an age, including time for Bromley to make a couple of substitutions, Bethan John stepped up and coolly smashed home the penalty to secure the points. FT 3-1.

This win moves us out of the relegation places for the time being. With Luton Town Development exploiting yet another blank Sunday for their Women’s Premier League team to pick up another unlikely three points at Hampton & Richmond, only time will tell if our victory today proves to be decisive in what is effectively a four-way relegation battle. But we take a lot of satisfaction and confidence from what was overall a well deserved win today.
