Sophia Pops Up Late To Win Cup Tie
Kingstonian move into Round Three of the John Greenacre Trophy with a 3-2 home win over London Academicals.
We had a break from league action today as we welcomed London Academicals to Kew Association in our rearranged 2nd round John Greenacre Cup match. We were missing Ciara Bonner, Shula Norman, Ellie Lourdes and Katie Braithwaite from last week’s squad but we welcomed back Zoe McLaughlin, Nadine Elish and Vicky Cockle.
We started sluggishly with tackles being missed and passes going astray. And, after 15 minutes, we were punished when an attempted clearance ricocheted back off an Academicals’ striker and the same player ran through and slotted the ball home. 0-1.
We weren’t playing intelligently at this stage, but we gradually re-grouped and started to exert some pressure on the Academicals. After 25 minutes, we finally made the breakthrough when the ball dropped to Sophia Demetriou on the left side of the opposition penalty area and she drilled the ball home. 1-1.
Only ten minutes later and Olivia Watson cut in from the left towards the Academicals' penalty area and let loose a 20 yard right-foot pile-driver that gave the goalie no chance. HT 2-1
We were on the front foot for most of the second half, with Sophia Demetriou leading our attack in committed fashion, but were unable to apply the finishing touch to our moves. Then, after 55 minutes, a sucker punch, a goal-kick was charged down by London Academicals and, similar to the first goal, a striker ran through to level things up. 2-2.
We made one or two late substitutions to ready ourselves for the penalty shoot-out that we expected to follow after 90 minutes. But, the changes proved unnecessary as, with only five minutes to go, Sophia Demetriou rode a challenge near the opposition left hand bye-line, drove towards the goal and saw her fierce drive from the tightest of angles ricochet off the goalkeeper into the back of the net. 3-2.
We still had to weather a dangerous Academicals’ free-kick on the edge of our penalty area, but the lofted ball evaded everyone in our penalty area and rolled harmlessly out for a goal-kick. FT 3-2.
This was our first competitive win since October, but performances have been better than results, and we look forward to the next round of the cup with confidence.
