Ladies finish off season with friendly at AFC Wimbledon
The Dons' Under 18s win 2-0 in Kingstonian's last game of the season.
We finished our season off today with a friendly against the AFC Wimbledon U18s who are already Surrey County League Champions and eyeing a double in the League Cup final next weekend. We were without both our regular goalkeepers, our top goalscorer Renae Huggan-Broughton and our players’ player of the season Olivia Watson as well as Sarah Sinkins, Abi Elliott and Saskia Veldhuizen, but we were pleased to be able to give a debut to Laura Timmins.
On AFC’s rock hard pitch, the home team started well and had the better of the early stages. With twenty-five minutes on the clock a shot was fired in to our goal area, hit a bump and completely changed trajectory evading Georgia Coninx, our first half nominee to play in goal, and ended up in the back of our net. 0-1
Ten minutes later a cross wasn’t dealt with and an AFC striker was left with a fairly simple shot inside our six yard box. HT 0-2.
The second half was a different story and we had the lion’s share of possession. Mairead Halliday was pushed up into attack alongside Sophia Demetriou, and the chances started to come our way. Twice Mairead made brilliant runs to get inside the AFC penalty area, and both times she hit great shots only to be thwarted by fine saves for the AFC keeper. Mairead gave a master class in this half in how to receive the ball with your back to goal, hold it up and then bring other players around her into the game. She was clearly our player of the match.
Elsewhere, Sophia Demetriou created a great chance for herself and came agonisingly close to scoring. The closest we came however was when after a melee in the AFC are, the ball was fired out of a ruck of players, possibly by Vicky Cockle though I’m not entirely sure, only to rebound back from the post before being whacked away. The AFC keeper made another couple of outstanding saves before the end of the game and was probably the difference between the two teams overall. FT 0-2
