Second Half Comeback Leads to K's Win
K's recover from 1-0 down to defeat New London Lionesses 3-1.
After two successive postponements, we were staring at a third blank weekend when our cup game at Luton Town Development was postponed. Fortunately, at short notice, we managed to arrange a friendly against the New London Lionesses who are riding high in the Greater London League Division 2 North. We were without Sophia Demetriou, Georgina Wickham and Charlotte Willis-Sloanes but, after several substitute appearances, we were able to give a first start of the season to Elesha Edman.
It was a freezing cold, albeit sunny, afternoon, and it took a long time for this game to warm up. The first half was a tepid affair, and, despite Kingstonian having a clear territorial advantage, we were not troubling the Lionesses goalkeeper often enough, and sure enough as half-time approached we were punished when we failed to contain a left wing raid by the Lionesses and the resulting cross was turned in at the far post. HT 0-1.
After weathering an early flurry from the Lionesses in the second half, we started to dominate possession and push our opponents back. We had hit the woodwork and had several narrow misses before finally, with 65 minutes on the clock, Annie Jenkins was given two bites of the cherry inside the Lionesses penalty area and with the second she beat the goalkeeper for the equaliser. 1-1. It was all one way traffic after that, and after striking the woodwork once again we took the lead on 75 minutes from a cool finish by Sarah Sinkins. 2-1. Five minutes later Renae Huggan-Broughton pounced inside the box to add a third and the game looked all up. 3-1.
However, there was one late bit of excitement when with their very last raid a Lioness striker went to ground in our penalty area with our goalkeeper Chloe Bailey in close attendance, and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was on target but Chloe dived to her right and smothered the ball to save. The referee blew his whistle immediately to signal full time. FT 3-1.
It was a handy run-out today against a very useful New London Lionesses side. We took a long time to work up a head of steam, but once we did in the second half, we ran out worthy winners.
