K's Fall Valiantly to League Leaders
Victoire Ladies do the double over the young K's team.
Today was our last game before the Winter break, and, even though we were playing the league leaders Victoire, we were determined to put on a good show to end what has been an amazing year for the Kingstonian Ladies. We were without Mairead Halliday, Elesha Edman and Saskia Veldhuizen but welcomed back Georgina Wickham, Charlotte Willis-Sloanes and Sophia Demetriou.
The first twenty-five minutes was fairy even Stevens with both attacks looking as though they had goals in them. Victoire were probably looking slightly the more dangerous with their strikers and midfielders racing on to long through balls. Eventually, one of these paid off when a Victoire player burst through the middle of our defence and left Chloe in goal with no chance. 1-0. We were well in the game even after this, but with 40 minutes on the clock, another fast raid from Victoire down their right resulted in the ball being pulled back from the bye-line across the goal, just evading the despairing dive of Chloe and leaving the Victoire striker with a fairly simple tap in. HT 2-0.
The second half began badly and within a couple of minutes the score was 3-0 when our defence failed to move up as a unit and a Victoire striker was able to exploit the space, move into our penalty area and beat Chloe with a drilled shot. Things didn’t look good at that stage, but they were about to get a whole lot better. Barely five minutes later a free kick from Annie Jenkins was flicked on and Olivia Watson stole in to hook the ball past the Victoire goalkeeper. 3-1.
The game swung from end to end, but on 70 minutes a rash tackle from a Victoire defender inside the penalty area saw the referee point to the spot. Up stepped Bethan John to expertly send the goalkeeper the wrong way. 3-2. It really was a great battle from then on with Victoire’s powerful team finding our young team more than a handful. However, the game was effectively sealed when a floated Victoire corner saw the ball bundled into the back of our net along with a couple of our defenders. The away supporters screamed for a foul, but to our dismay the referee said he was unsighted and gave the goal. FT 4-2.
Victoire are a strong, experienced team and will be there or thereabouts when the league title is decided. Our young team gave them a good game today – proof that we are improving week by week. We are just past the midway point of the season, mid-table in our first season at this level, and looking for a strong push in the second half of the season.
We wish our players, officials and supporters a very Happy Christmas and we will see you all in January.
