Two out of two for the Ladies
Ladies Continue Strong Start to the Season with Victory over Brentford
We travelled to Brentford WFC today for our first away game, backed by a very welcome and growing number of Kingstonian supporters. We had almost the perfect colour clash today with Brentford – only stripes compared to our hoops – so we had an outing for our smart sky blue change strip.
We started the game brightly with the wind at our backs, and had the better of the opening exchanges, though Brentford looked organised in defence and dangerous on the counter-attack. And indeed, after 20 minutes of the match we had an almighty let off on one of Brentford’s quick breaks. A Brentford striker broke through our defence, rounded Chloe in goal and slid the ball towards the gaping net. It looked all over a goal, but the ball started to slow on the generously grassed surface, and a Brentford striker decided to run in to make certain and tap the ball over the line. Fortunately for us, the linesman had spotted that she had made her run from an off-side position and the goal was chalked off. Phew!
Back we went onto the attack, with first Carolina Boltz, Mairead Halliday and Saskia Veldhuizen and then Sophia Demetriou, Sarah Sinkins and Renae Huggan-Broughton threatening the Brentford goal. Finally, after 35 minutes, a burst out of midfield from Olivia Watson past the Brentford left back saw her feed Sophia Demetriou inside the penalty area, and Sophia coolly slotted home. 0-1. Five minutes later and it was 0-2 when, for the second week running, Renae Huggan-Broughton pounced to neatly turn in a corner. HT 0-2.
The early period of the second half saw Brentford taking advantage of the wind to pen us back in our own half; however, our defence of Annie Jenkins, Georgina Wickham, Nele Quast, Laura Joseph and Lucy Potter were resolute, and in midfield Hanna Robson, Hannah Jacobsen, Olivia Watson and Vicky Cockle were working hard to ensure we didn’t roll over. We survived a few scares, but then after 55 minutes another lightning break led by Olivia Watson saw her feed the speedy Renae Bruggan-Houghton and she strode through to plant the ball wide of the Brentford keeper 0-3.
Credit to Brentford however as they didn’t give up, and back they came at us. And, with 15 minutes on the clock, a long ball caught the wind and evaded our defence for a Brentford striker to stride on to and slide the ball past Chloe Bailey in goal. 1-3. In the last few minutes of the game, Chloe had to be alert and made a few important stops, but the game finally drew to a close with the score 1-3.
So, our great start to the season continues with victories over two strong sets of opponents. It’s a squad game and the entire squad played their part today, and that will be the case throughout what will be a long season. Next week we return to our Kew Association ground for our first home game of the season against Enfield Town, and we look forward to welcoming our supporters to that too.
